Khomotso Mthembu is a Mining Engineer and Researcher, with experience across South Africa’s gold, platinum, and iron ore sectors. Her career has provided exposure to both underground and surface mining environments, enabling her to develop a broad understanding of the technical, operational, and strategic challenges associated with diverse mining commodities.

She currently serves as a Work Management Scheduler at Kumba Iron Ore’s Sishen Mine, where she plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between mine planning and operational execution, ensuring that strategic objectives are translated into practical and achievable production outcomes. Throughout her career, Khomotso has gained multidisciplinary experience across underground & surface production, mine planning, scheduling, ventilation, geology, rock engineering, safety management, and business improvement. 

Her exposure to deep-level gold mining, conventional and mechanised platinum mining, and large-scale surface iron ore operations has equipped her with a well-rounded perspective of mining systems and operational excellence across the mining value chain. In her current role, she works closely with technical and operational teams to align production schedules, equipment deployment, maintenance requirements, and business objectives. By integrating planning activities with operational execution, she supports safe and efficient mining operations while contributing to production performance, resource optimisation, and the achievement of strategic mine objectives. 

Khomotso holds a Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BEngTech) and (BEngTech Honours) in Mining Engineering and has completed a Master of Sustainable Mining research at the University of Johannesburg. As a researcher, she is passionate about the future of mining and the role of technology in transforming the industry. Her interests include Mining 4.0, digital transformation, smart mining systems, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), automation, real-time data analytics, and connected mining environments. Through her research and professional experience, she advocates for the adoption of innovative technologies that improve safety, sustainability, productivity, and operational decision-making across the mining sector.

 She is a holder of a Blasting Certificate and Shift Supervisor Certificate and is currently progressing towards obtaining her Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency (MMCC), further strengthening her technical and leadership capabilities within the mining industry. Beyond her professional responsibilities, Khomotso is passionate about leadership development, mentorship, and fostering collaboration between industry and academia. She is committed to supporting the next generation of mining professionals and advancing discussions around innovation, sustainability, and the future of mining in Africa. ] As Committee Manager of UJMASAF, Khomotso leverages her experience in mining to coordinate committee activities and support the successful implementation of organisational programmes and initiatives. 

Her professional background has equipped her with the ability to align strategic objectives with operational execution, monitor progress against planned outcomes, facilitate collaboration across diverse teams, and ensure effective communication between leadership structures and implementation teams.
