Lerato Eugenia Mokonyane
Lerato Eugenia Mokonyane is a highly accomplished mining professional with extensive experience in mine surveying, mining regulation, leadership, and stakeholder engagement. She currently serves as an Inspector of Mines (Mine Surveying) at the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR), where she is responsible for auditing mine survey records, ensuring regulatory compliance, processing statutory applications, and providing technical guidance on mining-related matters. She holds a Mine Surveyor’s Certificate of Competency, a Baccalaureus Technologiae Degree in Mineral Resource Management from the University of Johannesburg, and a National Diploma in Mineral Surveying.
Her commitment to continuous professional development is reflected in her completion of the Women in Leadership Programme at the University of the Witwatersrand Business School and the Advanced Management Development Programme, which she completed with distinction. Lerato’s career spans both industry and government. She began her professional journey at Sibanye-Stillwater (formerly Gold Fields), where she served as a Survey Graduate and Surveyor before joining the DMPR. Throughout her career, she has contributed significantly to the advancement of the mine surveying profession through her involvement in competency examinations, professional associations, and industry committees. Known for her strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, Lerato is passionate about professional development, mentorship, and the sustainable growth of South Africa’s mining industry.
She is committed to fostering collaboration, promoting knowledge sharing, and supporting the next generation of mining professionals. Lerato currently serves as the Communications Manager of the University of Johannesburg Mining and Survey Alumni Forum (UJMASAF), where she leads the Forum’s communication and stakeholder engagement efforts, strengthens relationships with alumni and industry partners, and helps advance the Forum’s mission of connecting, empowering, and developing mining and survey professionals. Committees Structure Committee Council Manager Khomotso Mthembu is a Mining Engineer and Researcher, with experience across South Africa’s gold, platinum, and iron ore sectors.
